The miracle of Hanukah occurred because the people of Israel would not submit to the assimilationist aims of spiritual and cultural oppression. They maintained their adherence to the Torah and to their unique cultural and intellectual heritage. By attacking the Torah the Greeks hit at the vitals of Jewish existence. They struck at the supernatural basis of Judaism. This necessitated a supernatural response. That response was the miracle of the festival of Hanukah, symbolized by the miracle of the oil, sufficient in quantity to burn one day, but burning eight days instead. This is not a military victory. True redemption, however, is grounded in spiritual victory over physical power.
