| A Star of Hope - Synagogue in Dohaney Street, Budapest - 1996, Acrylic on canvas, 75 x 60 cm | |
![]() This temple became a place of refuge, retreat and shelter in 1944 as it protectively embraced about 2000 persecuted Jews condemned to die, and did not let the bloodstained killers near them. This wonderful large building was hit 27 times and there were gaping damages on its roofing. But the will to live, the faith and confidence in the future of the Hungarian Jews who suffered great losses in human life, was proved by the renovation of this synagogue so that active Jewish life could start again. It is the second largest synagogue in the world and is a symbol for the Jewish people, a torch-flame showing the way. |
