| The Unforgotten Jews of Kovno - 1998, Conti crayon on paper, 64 x 54 cm | |
![]() The Ninth Fort is a site in Kovno, Lithuania, of mass slaughter of Jews. Under independent Lithuania, between the two wars, the Ninth Fort was used as a prison. During the German occupation of Kovno in the Second World War, from June 1941-1944, over 50 000 people were killed in the Ninth Fort and buried there. The emotions evoked by these cleverly designed Holocaust memorials will be wasted unless their meaning comprises the important promise of resurrection. We must always remember that Israel emerged triumphant after the Second World War. Even though the Jews continue to suffer, G-d has promised us that we will rise from the valley of death to live once more. We are reminded here of Ezekiel, chapter 37, "Then He said to me: 'Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold they say, "Our bones are dried and our hopes are lost" … Therefore prophesy and say to them thus says the Lord G-d; 'Behold O my people, I will open your graves and … bring you into the land of Israel …' Ezekiel, 37:11-12 |
