Rachel's Tomb - 1987, Gouache on cloth, 52 x 42 cm


Rachel, matriarch of Israel, favourite wife of Jacob. Jacob worked for her father Laban in return for her hand. Mother of Joseph and Benjamin, she died while giving birth to the latter. The traditional site of her tomb is in northern Bethlehem and has been venerated at least from the 4th century, C.E. Women from all over the world visit this tomb to pray for their unborn children, their healthy children, their sick children and their dead children.
