Lilith - Queen of Demons - 1994, Hand-coloured etching, 20 x 15 cm

Lilith is portrayed as the other face of Eve. Whereas Eve is motherly, respectable, proper and subservient to her husband, Lilith is exactly the opposite. She is uninhibited, independent, sexual and available to married and unmarried men who are not fulfilled with their partners.

Lilith glides along through legend, fable and folklore and refuses to be silenced. She has existed longer than any other demon in mythological literature. The reason she has survived is she is not just a demon. Rather she is an indispensable part of all women who refuse to remain subservient to their men. When Adam insisted that Eve lie beneath him, the Lilith within her rebelled and was then exiled to the area of sorcery and witchcraft, to the water of the Nile and the fires of Salem. However Lilith has never disappeared and continues to exist for as long as humanity does.
