Rabbi Low, the Legendary Father of Prague - 1994, Hand-coloured etching, 20 x 15 cm

The most celebrated Rabbi of Prague is Judah Low, who is known as the 'Maharal', of Prague. Even though he has been dead for so many years, he is still known as the Rabbi of Prague. His chair is still present in the Synagogue and there are thousands of legends about him. One of them is that no Rabbi has dared to sit on his chair in the synagogue.

The legends of Rabbi Low even penetrated into the tales of the Christian community. The most famous Bohemian fable highlights a rose. The angel of death was determined to destroy Rabbi Low's magical powers, especially his gift in eluding death. The angel of death knew how much the Rabbi loved his one granddaughter and that he would never rebuff her. The angel of death therefore hid himself in the rose, which the granddaughter offered to the Rabbi. The Rabbi was aware of what was taking place but he did not want to upset her by not accepting the present. As he smelt the rose, the angel of death won the battle by entering his body and possessing his soul. The famous sculpture by Ladislav Saloun illustrated this legend. The Czechs hid the statue from the Nazis during the Second World War and then returned it to its place of honour once the war was over. This action explains to us that Rabbi Low was not just a Jewish marvel, but a Czech one as well.
