The Magician - 1994, Hand-coloured etching, 20 x 15 cm

Practical or magical Kabbalah has never been approved of by orthodox opinion, but it has nevertheless always been practised. There exist various Kabbalistic literature stating how human will can and does influence psychological principles, therefore taking control of conditions in the World of Formation and can sometimes even create a material object. The traditional objection to magic is that it modifies the equilibrium of the Worlds and thereby changes the order of things. Magic is also viewed as an impediment to spiritual development, in that the magician becomes so obsessed with the World of Yezirah and then fails to enter the Worlds above.
