The Wheel of Fortune - 1994, Hand-coloured etching, 20 x 15 cm

The most enduring symbol throughout time and across every culture is that of the wheel. In the process of evolution can be symbolised all growth, progress, movement and direction. At the same time, it is a symbol of infinity and eternity. Hence the wheel is also representative of Fate. However, one must learn responsibility, and in so doing must be willing to overcome the need to rely on external forces such as Fate, and become aligned with the inner force of the Divine. The symbol in this painting embodies the complexity and depth of this idea. The words in the centre ("without end") are to be found at the top of the Tree of Life of the Kabbalah, and refer to the infinity of all that Is, Was and Will Be. The similarity in concept and form to the black hole cannot but be noticed, and we must remember that the black hole is believed to be an entrance to another universe. This infinite wheel is the wheel of Life, and one must learn that all is part of a great and endless cycle; that the cycle of birth and rebirth is without end, just as is the cycle of all in nature, and Divinity itself.
