The Ascension of Elijah - 1988, Monotype, 60 x 52 cm

A living legend while on earth, Elijah became a celestial legend in Jewish tradition, one who, like Enoch, was translated heavenward without undergoing the intermediary stage of death. Indeed, in the literature of Midrash, Elijah and Enoch are often one and the same person. Since heaven is no place for mortals, Elijah the immortal became the most active angel in all of Jewish lore, and the most beloved.

"And it came to pass as they still went on and talked, that there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up in a whirlwind to heaven. And Elisha saw it and he cried: "My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more, and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them into two pieces …" (Second Kings, 2:12-13) Isaiah 11:6
