Elijah, Angel of the Covenant - 1990, Silk painting, 75 x 65 cm

Prophet Elijah, who lived in the ninth Century BCE, during the reign of Ahab, king of Israel has been described as the most romantic and enigmatic character in Jewish history. As the ever-ready champion of his people, Elijah has been supposed to rove about the earth testing the hospitality and goodness of men and women. As the "angel of the covenant" (Malachi) and protector of children, he is believed to be the invisible participant at circumcisions. Seated at the right hand of the sandek, the person privileged to hold the child during the circumcision ceremony, invisible Elijah guards the infant from danger.
