The universal man, as Rabbi Kook conceived of him, is one whose sympathies embrace all forms of life, not only the purely human. The enlightened man of the future, he felt, was to shun the eating of meat as an act of compassion for animal life. The original man as G-d created him was to use as his food "every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree yielding fruit" (Gen. 1:29). The eating of meat was first sanctioned to Noah (Gen. 9:3). After Adam's disobedience, humans disclosed their pitifully low moral state, G-d compromised and allowed him/her to be a meat eater. But to reaching his/her true spiritual maturing he/she must return to his/her original innocence.
