Jacob - 1994, Acrylic on canvas, 74 x 59 cm


Jacob earned his share of eternity, but it was at a huge price. He was responsible for the destiny of Israel, the actual historical people of Israel, including the eternal, meta-historical Israel. Jacob was very aware of the multiplicity that was to characterise his descendants. Unlike his father's and his grandfather's children, his children were all part of Jewish history; even those who were exiled. Jacob foresaw how hard the future would be for Israel, the amount of suffering the people of Israel would have to endure.
