King Solomon – Make Love Not War - 1994, Hand-coloured etching, 20 x 15 cm

Solomon viewed his many marriages as a way of securing his relations with foreign nations and great kingdoms. Solomon was convinced this was a political move and not a personal desire. He believed in ‘making love not war.’ However, these marriages were the destruction of King Solomon’s noble image. In 1 Kings 11:4 it states that, “His wives turned away his heart after other gods.”

Solomon the Wise did not take into account that the ordinary people looked to his foreign wives as role models and they too began to worship alien gods and took part in idolatrous customs. These pagan cults were dangerous as they turned the people away from G-d and became to downfall of Solomon’s reign.
