Moses, the Most Human Prophet - 1999, Pastel and coloured pencil on paper, 69 x 54 cm

Elie Wiesel says of Moses that his life began with tears, his own. Batya, the Pharaoh's daughter, noticed a basket floating down the Nile and discovered in it a Jewish infant - she knew it was Jewish because it cried not like an infant but like an adult, like a community of adults - his entire people was crying in him, said one of the commentators. Nobody was present at his death. And so, in a way, he lives on inside us, every one of us. For as long as one child of Israel, somewhere, proclaims his Law and his truth, Moses lives on through him/her, as does the burning bush, which consumes a person's heart without consuming his/her faith.
