The Birth of Souls - 1995, Acrylic on canvas, 75 x 60 cm

The Zohar describes how the Shekhinah (the female counterpart of G-d) gives birth to the souls after being bitten by "the other side", the primordial snake.

"When her time comes, the Holy One, blessed be He, summons a great supernal snake, and he bites her in that place, and she gives birth … You might ask what need is there for the snake in a matter like this. The answer is that he opens the way for the souls' descent into the world; for if he were not to open the ways for the descent below (the soul) would not dwell in man. It is written "Sin lies at the door." What does "at the door" mean? It means the door that is prepared for birth, for the discharge of souls into the world, and at this door (the snake) lies. But with regard to the souls that are to descend into holy bodies, he does not lie by that door, and he has no power over that particular soul. Otherwise, the snake bites, and the place is defiled, and it is not a pure soul."
