Judgement connected with death begins with Rosh Hashanah, the Day of Judgement, when the fate of all humankind is decided for the coming year. On the night of Hoshanah Rabba, when the decree is finally made beyond any possibility of appeal, the angels descend in order to remove to the higher realms the images of those for whom death has been decreed in the year to come, and they commit them to the care of Metatron.
Once the image has been removed, the person concerned is thought to be no longer a part of this world, and from that moment on a place is prepared for his neshamah, a place for his ruah in the Garden of Eden, and a place where his nefesh can rest and refresh itself while it is wandering abroad. During these 30 days when preparations are being made for death it turns its attention to its eventual place in the World to Come and even during the day it is not content within the body.
