Once the final decision has been made and the moment of death has arrived, the person is judged again. He is confronted by 3 messengers who examine his day and sins and all that he has done in the world. The person confesses everything with his lips and then seals it with his own hand. Once he has signed the deed of confession, the body and spirit have fulfilled their joint role in this world, and they separate from one another. During the crisis of death, while body and soul are experiencing the agonies of separation, visions appear before the person’s eyes, and images from another world fill the vacant space being created before the person.
His horizon is suddenly widened, just before his/her eyes close for ever, like a flame that spurts up just before it is extinguished, and he is permitted to see what was denied him throughout his natural life. The Zohar explains: “We have learned: When a man lies [on his deathbed] and judgement rests upon him [decreeing] that he should leave this world, he is granted an additional supernal spirit that he never had before. And once this has been granted him, and he sees, he departs from this world. Death is therefore not only a time of disintegration and emptiness but also a time of exaltation and supernal vision because of the gift of the extra spirit.”
