The Story of Torah

This painting shows how the Torah is likened unto a beautiful woman hidden in the interior of a palace, who, when her friend and beloved passes by, opens for a moment a secret window and is seen only by him, then again retires and disappears for a long time: so the Torah shows herself only to the elect (those devoted to her with soul and body). In the beginning, deeply veiled, she beckoned to the one passing: it all simply depends if in his understanding, he perceives this gentle hint. Later she whispers to him a few words and now her countenance is hidden in a thinner veil which his glances can hardly penetrate. After he has accustomed himself to her society, she finally shows herself to him and entrusts him with the innermost secrets of her heart."
