CUPS

Cups cards relate to the story of David and Bathsheba. Cups correspond to the heart and to the emotions.

Ace of Cups

David is the essence of masculinity; everything about him was pure charm and harmony. Yet he could also be spiteful, vain, deceitful and treacherous. He always managed to spread his life-bringing joy, yet was also the fearful king who filled human hearts with the frenzy of passion. Those whom David chose for his victims were often unfortunate and would even betray their own partners. But the same king protected those who worshipped God.

Divination: This card represents a rise of susceptible emotion. The person is ready to set off on the voyage of love.

David 2 David 2 - 2009 Mixed Media on Paper, actual size excluding border, 7.5 cm X 12.5 cm.

Two of Cups

David sees Bathsheba having a bath and is immediately attracted to her.

Divination: The fresh interest, which has been set in motion with the Ace, has now discovered a purpose. Erotic attraction represents something both sensual and spiritual, for as well as providing physical pleasure it fulfils the soul by seeking a soul mate for its own completion.

David3 David 3 - 2009 Mixed Media on Paper, actual size excluding border, 7.5 cm X 12.5 cm.

Three of Cups

David sent messengers to fetch Bathsheba and she came into unto him, and he lay with her and then she returned to her house.

Divinination: Another aspect of life is opening up since the first leg of the journey is complete. This is a festive card, which represents poignant emotional satisfaction and the accomplishment of the preliminary appeal. However, one is naive when we are captivated by our impression of the other, but where the genuine person has not yet become detectable to our eyes.

Four of Cups

Uriah is sent off to the battle. David wrote a letter saying: Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.

Divination: The original fulfilment of the three has already shown evidence that there is a disenchantment, for there is an increasing consciousness that something is amiss. There is hesitation and doubt.

Five of Cups

Bathsheba never questioned the circumstances of Uriah's death, even though Nathan denounced David. However, some part of Bathsheba's mind registered the shattering of his spirit and understood what had caused it.

Divination: The five of Cups represents that trial time in a relationship when one goes through distress over past deeds. While it is painful, disloyalty interrupts the dreamlike unreal state of being in love and completely joined together with one another, for once you have you have experienced your shadow self you really come to know yourself. Bathsheba now knows what her new husband is really like and she loves him nevertheless, not the fantasy of him. She does suffer regret but knows deep in her heart that her and David's future is of great consequence to the future of Israel.
