SWORDS

Swords cards represent struggle and animosity. They have a double function; they stand for justice but also for destruction.

Jacob 1 Jacob 1 - 2009 Mixed Media on Paper, actual size excluding border, 7.5 cm X 12.5 cm

Ace of Swords

Rebecca suffered greatly because the children struggled within her. (Gen. 25:22-23). The Lord told her: Two nations are in your womb, and two people born of you, shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.

Divination: This card proclaims an eruption of raw energy and in this particular case it is the preliminary upsurge of a completely new and different attitude to the world around you. Such a new consciousness is intimidating in that it challenges the old view. Therefore, this new energy is very compelling and if channelled properly can be creative, but if not, then can be destructive.

Jacob 2 Jacob 2 - 2009 Mixed Media on Paper, actual size excluding border, 7.5 cm X 12.5 cm.

Two of Swords

When the brothers grew up, Esau became a skilled hunter and the favourite of his father, who loved to eat the game Esau brought him. Jacob was of a quiet disposition and remained close to the family tents. Rebecca loved him more than she did her other son.

Divination: This card indicates a state of motionless, where the rival sides have created a stalemate because neither of them is prepared to make the move. The fact is that either person has to act in order to establish the much-needed change that is needed so that life can continue.

Jacob 3 Jacob 3 - 2009 Mixed Media on Paper, actual size excluding border, 7.5 cm X 12.5 cm

Three of Swords

Rebecca wanted Isaac to rather bless Jacob and so she took the best robes of her elder son Esau and put them on Jacob. With the skins of the kids she covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck. Then she put into the hands of Jacob the savoury meat, and the bread she had prepared. The blind Isaac then blessed Jacob.

Divination: This is a grief-stricken card, because the discord in the Two of Swords has at last exploded and the poison has been released. Obviously this is painful, but at the same time it is a relief, as with the release of the poison, a healing can take place and a new beginning is in sight.

Jacob 4 Jacob 4 - 2009 Mixed Media on Paper, actual size excluding border, 7.5 cm X 12.5 cm.

Four of Swords

Esau hated Jacob because he had taken away his birthright and he therefore wanted to slay him. Jacob left and that night in an open field he slept and dreamt that there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and the angels of G-d were ascending and descending on it.

Divination: This card reflects a calm time of quiet and meditation. Here we see Jacob in the place of his banishment. Therefore a period of introspection and introversion is called for after the emotional turmoil of the Three of Swords.

Jacob 5 Jacob 5 - 2009 Mixed Media on Paper, actual size excluding border, 7.5 cm X 12.5 cm

Five of Swords

Jacob went to Laban; Rebeccas brother in a place called Haran and fell in love with his daughter, Rachel. Laban said that if he worked for him for seven years then he could marry Rachel. Laban tricked Jacob and in the darkness he brought Leah to Jacob, as it was the custom of the land to marry the older daughter first. Laban then said that Jacob could marry Rachel if he served him for seven more years as a second marriage gift. Jacob had to agree, as he loved Rachel.

Divination: This card symbolizes acceptance of restrictions, limitations and the confines of one's fate. Rather than complain, one should look with gratitude at the blessings one has rather than what one does not have.
