
The legend of the blue-skinned incarnate god Krishna, based on hymns and spring-harvest ceremonies, deals with his passionate love affairs with cow-herd girls, called Gopis. On one occasion, he revealed himself as containing the whole universe of worlds with their men, animals and all the heavens in his body. The cult of Krishna provided the theme for an enormous quantity of post-medieval art. The minutiae of the divine love affairs inspired vast quantities of superb painting (and music), especially at the 17th and 18th centuries Rajput courts. All this art was strongly conditioned by Indian thinking on aesthetics, a subject which was dominated by a great tantric philosopher called Abhinavagupta.
