The Zohar explains: “For we have learned that at the hour of a man’s [woman’s] departure from the world, his [her] father [mother] and his relatives gather round him [her], and he [she] sees them and recognizes them, and likewise all with whom he [she] associated in this world, and they accompany his [her] soul to the place where it is to abide … We have further learned that at the time of a man’s [woman’s] death, he [she] is allowed to see his [her] relatives and companions from the other world. If he [she]is virtuous, they all rejoice before him [her] and give him [her] greetings, but if not, then he [her] is recognized only by [those] … who every day are thrust down to Gehinnom.”
